Hi Karim,

Very interesting project. I know this a bit late, since you have spent
all this week studying existing implementations but have you  looked
at GRASS and its r.to.vect module[1]? Also your project page doesn't
seem to talk about extracting line-like elements into vector lines.
Have you considered those? There is a module, r.thin[2], in GRASS
which thins thick lines so that they can be extracted.
