Dear students,

citing the _Google Summer of Code Recommendations for Students_ [1] how to increase your chances of being selected:

-----
*Demonstrate your skills

Consider that mentors are being contacted by several students that apply for the same project. A way to show that you are the best candidate, is to demonstrate that you are familiar with the software and you can code. How? Browse the bug tracker, fix some bugs and propose your patch in mailing list, and/or ask mentors to challenge you! Moreover, bug fixes are a great way to get familiar with the code.
-----

this mantra is mentioned again in the mail [2] at start of the application period:

* Remember that GSoC is a highly competitive program, so demonstrate your skills, be proactive!*

Application Review Period, when organizations review and select student proposals, will be: March 27, 2018 - April 23, 2018.

Students, please post a short compilation how you showed your skills (e.g. links to contributions to fix a bug, code contributions, etc) here on the mailing list at the beginning of the Application Review Period (March 27).

This will ease the evaluation of your skills and proposals by mentors and increases your chances of being selected.

Good luck to everyone!

Helmut (on behalf of the OSGeo GSoC admin team)
