Somewhat related to the portal/sharing idea:
The USGS had a strong (20 people) presence at where2.0 and wherecamp.
They're very interested in using a system like OpenStreetMap to store and
share their data. More importantly, they want to use it for sharing data to
and from local and state governments.
It was pretty exciting (as a citizen interested in data) to see them so
excited to share so much data.
