Anyone care to check out this new website by USGS to see if these WMS links
really work?
I still think their website is confusing...

Hi Brian,
We added WMS links as an additional column in our list of services at
http://viewer.nationalmap.gov/example/services.html. As we discussed on
the phone on August 24, an example of a WMS URL is "
http://raster.nationalmap.gov/ArcGIS/services/TNM_Large_Scale_Imagery/MapServer/WMSServer?
" when adding a service to ArcMap.
In regards to your question about 4-band, we do not offer this additional
band in our REST service endpoint for imagery display since the service
itself is a mosaic of 3-band. However, most downloads of 1-meter imagery
from The National Map Viewer contain 4-bands. The deliverables of the 2012
NAIP program included 4-band imagery as the base product.

Thanks for the clarification on the WMS address but that is only half the
answer.
For whatever reason, the link won't fully load into ArcMap 10.0. Note I am
starting with a blank map running Win7.
The problem could be ESRI, the WMS configuration you are serving, or the
DoI network.
The Add layer appears to work and it does add the TNM Large Scale imagery
as a layer.
However nothing comes up. Zooming in on the blank screen makes it appear
the 1 meter layer goes from gray to bold...but still nothing comes up.
Also from a layer stand point, you are mixing the 1 foot imagery under the
1 meter imagery. This is not logical.
More importantly, your answer does not address the overall larger problem.
A simple list of OGC compliant feeds. Yes a link as you have it to the
entire code page is helpful for the programmers but for us users not
interested in the code...a simple list would do wonders.
Also, I am not smart enough to know why a '?' mark needs to be added to
each layer link. (My guess is this is an ESRI thing?) It might help to make
a note for folks on the webpages so this is not a confusing issue.
Let me know if you have any fixes.

For future reference when adding a WMS into ArcMap, use the
"OnlineResource" link but include a "?" at the end, such as the example in
http://raster.nationalmap.gov/ArcGIS/services/TNM_Large_Scale_Imagery/MapServer/WMSServer?request=GetCapabilities&service=WMS
