I figured it would be easier to chat at the TCMUG meeting. It’s kind of a complicated question to answer.

Hi Lynn,

Have you received any responses? I might be able to help, but I'm certainly not at the expert level as some of the other TCMUG users. What types of interactions would your users have with the map? Will they mostly just be viewing the layers? Or do you envision other interactions (e.g., as mouse moves over properties, display some information)?

I'd be happy to share some notes from a tutorial I had with Dan Little (another TCMUG member). He showed me how to install the open source GIS stack on an Amazon server. Postgres/PostGIS database, Mapserver, Apache web server. You wouldn't need to use the database though, if you just want to display data from the shapefiles on the map. I'm sure there are a number of good tutorials on how to create a mapfile (the configuration needed for MapServer to render maps). You can start here: http://mapserver.org/tutorial/section1.html
I use either Leaflet, Mapbox GL JS API or OpenLayers for the mapping interface, depending on project needs.

Best,
Jennifer

TCMUG,

I am writing to request a mentor to help me plan a website using MapServer that would display townhome associations in Dakota County. I am president of my townhome association in Lakeville and very interested in mapping townhome associations in the metro area.

I think the feature layers I would be working with are:

1. Aerial imagery of Dakota County
2. Boundary polygons (e.g., municipalities, legislative districts, US Census tracts, school districts)
3. Dakota County tax parcel polygons
4. Dakota County features (e.g., streets, water bodies, healthcare facilities, shopping, public transportation routes...)
5. Digitized polygon, line and point features within townhome association (e.g., building footprints, trees, walking paths, tennis courts, utilities...)

I am developing a method to identify townhome associations using county tax parcel data from MetroGIS and have used QGIS to create a map of townhome association parcels in Lakeville.

I need to understand how to manage and integrate these data using QGIS, MapServer and maybe other software applications into a working website.

I am a TCMUG member and plan to attend the user group meeting at the Black Stack on March 14th at 4:30pm

Thank you for your consideration.
