I found that using a minLodPixels of 256 for both the parent and child  
regions gives a somewhat nicer experience, since  you don't end up  
with two layers showing at once, as you do in the shipping setup.  I  
think it's also marginally better on bandwidth, since you aren't  
grabbing 256x256 images and then displaying them at 25% scale,  
effectively discarding the majority of their information.
