[Tilecache] Preponderance of "stuck lock" errors when running tilecache_seed.py

I'm curious why I'm seeing so many of these errors now? I'm using Tilecache
against a MapServerLayer to seed my cache, and am getting these errors
whenever I try to view the web page at the same time as the seeding is
taking place. This did not seem to be a problem when the layer was a WMS
one, and I wasn't using metatiling. I'd like to know what conditions will
cause this to happen, so that I can take care in the future not to abort a
seeding run before it is done.

Thanks,

Roger

PS - oh, and the lock file named in the exception is never present on the
system. Example below.

Exception: You appear to have a stuck lock. You may wish to remove the lock
named:
/var/www/tiles/50m_global/5/0/31.png.lck
