[Tilecache] protected WMS (Basic Auth)

I'm trying to set up TileCache as a Proxy to an external and protected WMS.

I found this post that contains a patch for TileCache to add supoport for basic auth:

The patch seems to be in the current release (2.1).

Sadly i don't know how to configure a WMS to use basic auth and i can't find any hint how to do it. Can someone point me to the right direction?
