[Ubuntu] gdal 1.9.1 installation

Probably you didn't find the corresponding gdal package name.
Since you've already enabled ubuntu-gis/unstable repository can you try :

sudo apt-get install  libgdal1 libgdal-dev

also if you want you can check the [deb] package information with :
apt-cache show libgdal-dev
