Sorry my last reply did not appear in the correct order so this is an
attempt to fix that.
My original reply:
If you are interested in using a Linux OS, and are just having trouble
getting started then you can visit
http://live.osgeo.org/en/download.html which is a preconfigured Xubuntu
with many open gis applications all ready pre-installed, including the ones
you just mentioned.
Ive used it myself with much success, especially when you just dont feel
like jumping through the install hoops.
This tutorial also provides its own .vdi to install into VirtualBox with
pre-installed software. Ive used this one a little less but so far it seems
good as well.

--though it only has grass and qgis installed, no postgres/postgis or
mapnik.
