Hi All
Can I make a me too pleading for members of Archaeological societies who may
have a significant interest in parish history?
Sorry if I'm widening the discussion too widely, but I have long wanted to
use the Edina resources with QGis for local history research.
I know licensing can be a nightmare which is why I've not followed it up
before. I won't be offended if "No" the answer...

Hi folks
Re schools and gis - we've done a lot of research on the needs of schools
for the curriculum re GIS and mapping and have some good contacts. In
addition to our Digimap for Schools service, we also have a WMS of the
Ordnance Survey data we use called MapStream. This is a paid for WMS and
the intention is to promote it in schools to use with open source GIS to
help provide a low cost solution to schools who want to start using desktop
GIS (primarily) but still need the non open OS data. Part of the promotion
would also be the inclusion of open data services to add value and richness.
It's early days for us on this, as we've had to focus our energies on the
Digimap for Schools service. But we will be ramping up the effort on
MapStream in early 2012, so any support and advice from OS Geo UK would be a
big help. Myself and Peter Wells have already had a couple of chats round
this, so have some ideas floating around on what we can do to help support
schools wanting to go down this route.....
cheers
Carol

Hi Denis,
I think the UK chapter could do something here. What we'd need is some idea
of the kind of things that Parishes etc need, so that we can try and create
(or gather) some content that is relevant. Would you be prepared to jot down
some ideas on the wiki pages at http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/United_Kingdom
about what parishes would need (software, data, particular tasks)?
The issue with schools is a bit more difficult as we need to know what is in
the curriculum, for the different key stages and so on. If anyone knows some
friendly teachers who would be prepared to help or even just point us in the
right direction, that would be a start!

I'd add to that request for schools a similar one for Parish Councils.
They're now members of the PSMA, but that helps not one iota when the
technology is as techy as it is.
Any ideas?
Denis

Hello,
I had a query about the options for GI software for a secondary
school. I know esri uk have set up a website to highlight their
software. I wondered if there is anything simple that covers open
source GIS?
The no cost of software is obviously better than ESRI but both open
source GIS and Open Street Map can come across as a bit techy.
Cheers,
Stu
