Launched in September 2011, the ELOGeo project
(http://elogeo.nottingham.ac.uk <http://elogeo.nottingham.ac.uk> ) at the
University of Nottingham¹s Nottingham Geospatial Institute aims to be the
principal global repository for learning material relating to open data,
open source and open standards in geospatial software. The repository has
been successful in its first phase in establishing itself both as a location
to deposit material and a source of information. The current implementation
was funded by JISC (http://www.jisc.ac.uk <http://www.jisc.ac.uk> ) and is
built on the DSpace open source repository. As of the start of March 2012,
we have 43 items, have served 34,291 item views and supported 7,969 searches
in the site. We are actively pursuing some high profile additions to the
repository which would significantly boost its content.
 
The project has now received further funding from JISC as part of its
³Digital Infrastructure Programme - Enhancing the Sustainability of Digital
Collections² programme.  The funding is particularly to improve the system
to support its long-term sustainability. The three objectives are:
1.   Interface Enhancement: a Web2.0 style interface to improve the user
experience, particularly for finding and browsing material from DSpace from
different semantic viewpoints.

2.   Material Enhancement: Adding Xerte interactive e-learning objects to
the ELOGeo materials (http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/xerte/
<http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/xerte/> ). Web-mapping is one of the
interactive functionalities that will be enhanced in Xerte for its inclusion
in ELOGeo, in association with the Learning Team at the university.

3.   Content Management and Sustainability Enhancement: Applying Web 2.0
techniques including crowd-sourcing & -editing to make the contents as
current, relevant, manageable and annotatable as possible. This will also
assist aged materials to be deprecated, presenting fresh content.

 
We wish to recruit a high calibre researcher to join the NGI Geospatial
Science team to work on enhancing ELOGeo.  Our priority is that the
candidate has a background in web development, preferably with experience
with geospatial systems or services. The researcher will have a key role in
further developing a community of users around ELOGeo, and working with
organisations such as OSGeo to source further material. Hence good
communication skills will be important
 
This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract until the end of February
2013. It is possible but not guaranteed that this can be extended to last
for a full calendar year from the start of employment.
