An informal birds of feather gathering also strikes me as far more
appropriate for OSGeo.

Probably just that you get the honor of buying the beer for everyone,
instead of just having them bring their own? ;)
I think a BOF would be more fun, and would accomplish the same thing,
but in a more grass roots kind of way.
