Anne,
this almost feels like RTFM. Thanks for finding this out. I checked it
and it works like a treat.

- -> we now just have to make sure that the news and events editors
understand that all English news should be set to language "Any"
except it is something really local.

We can still have localized news and events for smaller events that
don't need global coverage. Just tested this with a German language
event in Vienna.

I have closed the tickets.
