Hi FOSS4G SotM Oceania Hub Managers,

While you're planning your hub event over the next couple of months, there
will be a lot of moving parts and it'll be a challenge to get everything
done. I'm sure most of you would agree that in this community, we want
everyone to feel welcome at our events, regardless of their gender,
ethnicity, age, educational background, or financial situation, and we want
to minimise our environmental impact.

At the first FOSS4G SotM Oceania conference in 2018, the Good Mojo Fund was
established to work toward this goal: in 2018, 7 people were sponsored to
attend the conference and then 13 people in 2019 as part of the Travel
Grant Program.

Past initiatives have included:

   -

   Travel Grant Program
   -

Networking breakfasts (Women in Geospatial, Travel Grantees)
   -

   Child-friendly events
   -

Tree planting (to mitigate carbon offsets)

In 2021, as a hub, you can access funds to help encourage diversity,
inclusion, and sustainability initiatives at your local event. You're
invited to be creative. What kinds of initiatives would make your community
feel welcome at your event? Do people need encouragement, kinship, or
financial support? Do they need free mobile data or financial assistance to
help attend a hub? Would being able to pay for daycare or bring children to
the event make it more accessible? If you're planning to have paid
registrations at your hub, you could use Good Mojo to fund free
registrations for people that might not be able to pay for them. You know
your local community best, so you know what works and what your priorities
are.

What you need to do:

Come up with a plan. What will you do? What will it cost? What will it
achieve, and how does it fit with the objectives of the Good Mojo Fund?

Be realistic and detailed. If you want to organise a breakfast, figure out
how many people will attend, and what the total cost will be. If you want
to provide reimbursement for travel costs, think about how you will
implement this. How will you decide who gets support, and how much they
will get? What will the total cost be?

To access funds to make your initiative a reality, get in touch with us at
grants at osgeo-oceania.org, the earlier the better, and no later than Tuesday
12 October. If you have an idea and want to talk it through, let us know -
we're here to help!

Finally, a request:

One way the Good Mojo Fund gets replenished is through contributions from
attendees and sponsors. Hubs that are selling registrations are encouraged
to add an option to donate to the Fund when attendees are registering. This
is a great way for conference attendees to support these initiatives
directly, and to share resources across the region. Local sponsors might be
also interested in donating to the Good Mojo if you present that as an
option.

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask on the public
foss4g-oceania at lists.osgeo.org mailing list, or privately on
grants at osgeo-oceania.org.

Cheers!
