[Foss4g2012] Concerns on FOSS4G 2012 (Academic Track)

Hi all,

I send this email to you because I am puzzled and a bit concerned about
the FOSS4G 2012 conference.

I am so in general, but especially about the Academic Track that I have
been trying to help organize. I have had enthusiastic replies and messages
of support from most of you about this, and John Wilson of the
Transactions in GIS journal has reacted positively on a possible
multi-year deal for publishing.

But from two "important players" I have had no feedback, namely from the
local organizers and from OSGEO. The people I contacted for that were mr
Xianfeng Song (mentioned as the local committee lead for academic track)
and mr Jeff McKenna (being the Chair of the OSGEO Conference committee).

The former has answered to my first email that "the LOC ever had a meeting
deciding to follow the customs to invite again those who ever working for
past academic tracks. To encourage more academic paper submission (...)
recommend to publish an IEEE conference proceeding.". I replied with a
question on how definite that was and if any contacts had been established
with IEEE, but until now have not had further communication.

I am aware that the Christmas Holidays were around and understandably many
people are hard to reach in that time. But because I also notice that the
2012 web page (2012.foss4g.org) is still barren and that the last message
on the foss4g2012 mailing list (foss4g2012 at lists.osgeo.org) was on
December 13 (by myself), I started to wonder what the status of the
conference is at the moment.

I had really wanted to send out a first Call for Papers before the New
Year, but feel I still cannot do that now without positive feedback from
OSGEO and the local organizers.

Yours truly,

--
