[gdal-dev] How can I generate an empty geotiff based on the extent of the shape file?

The output for gdal_rasterize has to be an existing geotiff.  If I don't
have an existing geotiff for the associated area how can I generate an empty
geotiff based on the extent of the shape file that I will be using as the
source for gdal_rasterize?
