[Geo4All] Do you want to do a webinar about FOSS4G for Geo4All?

Moreno-sanchez, Rafael Rafael.Moreno at ucdenver.edu
Fri Feb 10 21:34:39 PST 2017

Hi Andrea,
Excellent!
I think it would be best to have it in March for 2 reasons:

1. Give you time to incorporate the latest.

2. Give us more time to announce and promote.

5 PM or 6 PM Italy time would make it convenient to people in Europe and America.

If Feb 16 is convenient for you we can accommodate it.

David,
If Feb 16 is chosen, how is your Webinars schedule around that day?
We are open.

Rafael

Dear Rafael and David,

Many thanks for your positive reaction to my proposal.

Having briefly consulted my colleagues last night (I will need a little support from them in the preparation), they are also enthusiastic about the opportunity of sharing our experiences with this type of audience, so let's do this!

A) Why FOSS/FOSS4G for our work: I grew up in a mixed proprietary/FOSS environment...with these options, whenever I had the opportunity of choosing a an approach, I always went for "F/OS" when possible, and -if that was not possible- I invite people to consider how it would be possible to go "F/OS" on the next round of a given project.

B) About the time of the presentation: I worked for some eight years for a US company, and we had a lot of teleconferences (mostly on PST), so I am flexible on the time...I would say please choose whatever time slot is comfortable for your attendees...if you want to set this via a doodle poll, that's also fine with me.

C) Concerning the date: two options here...it could be either next week (Feb 16 or 17) or after mid-March, ideally even April.

What changes : having the webinar next week, I would essentially cut down a 50-minute selection of material which I have rehearsed at least 170 times in public events (plus a lot more in meetings) over the past ten years...this would be great and, even though I occasionally advertize events and news on these mailing lists, I am sure what you hear will be of interest for many.

At the same time, we would miss some level of elaboration on things which have been happening since mid-December, and there have been A LOT of things happening by our team (blog posts per month on pibinko.org<http://pibinko.org> after the Summer went like 3-6-22-12 and 8 as of Feb 10). These things are related to our project and are showing the cutting edge of what we do with our "F/OS" approach.

However, in order to prepare a decent summary of the "cutting edge", we need a little time and especially some "chill out" phase, which we do not have right now (pls. see http://www.pibinko.org/calendar/).

...so: I am open to your choices on date (between Feb 16 or 17) or after mid-March (with a date TBD ASAP, if this were to be your choice)

Many thanks for your attention, and best regards from Italy.

Hi Andrea, everyone,
Yes!
This would be fantastic.
A topic that would be of interest to a broad audience.

We can run the webinar as a join event with ASPRS (David Alvarez) to provide it with a broader audience and distribution.

If you briefly touch on “Why FOSS/FOSS4G for our work” it would be great.

Can you give us some tentative dates to start scheduling the presentation.
Around 5:00-6:00 pm Italy time would work best for audiences in America and Europe/Africa.
50 min presentation
10 min questions

David or I set up the webinar broadcast and recording.

Thank you
Rafael

Dear Rafael,

Concerning webinars, I would like to submit a proposal from Italy (Southern Tuscany, to be more precise).

We are in fact in the tenth anniversary of an operation which has been intertwining culture, environment, and open innovation since 2006, involving a group of Italians.

The group has been evolving and relating to various legal entities, while always retaining its nature of what may be defined as a "loose integration" paradigm for collaboration.

I have been one of the founding members of the Italian (or italian-language...?) OSGEO Chapter, then creating my own small NGO (Attivarti.org) , gradually interacting with small-medium enterprises, national research institutes, universities etc.

I will be presenting a poster about this in the upcoming FOSS4G-IT event in Genova, in a couple of hours.

We will then be having three events at the end of February, related to our participatory light pollution monitoring project, and have the Open Data Day following.

Putting a lot of projects into a single perspective, I might sum the whole story proposing that the webinar would deal with "how free/open source geomatics can integrate in local communities (mainly rural) to improve resilience and quality of life.

...the webinar might also represent a way of summarizing in almost over nine years afert this: http://www.pibinko.org/riflessioni-sul-tematismo-on-freeopen-source-gis/ , and engaging most of the people and territories you see in the video in the projects which you find detailed in www.pibinko.org<http://www.pibinko.org> and www.attivarti.org<http://www.attivarti.org>

If you think this can be a topic of interest, I can discuss the case with my colleagues and we can lay out a plan to deliver the webinar (no sooner than May).

Thank you for your attention, and best regards

Hi everyone,
I am collecting proposals for new webinars.

Great way to showcase your work or ideas, have it recorded, and made available to a broad audience in the Geo4All YouTube Channel.

Very simple:

• Prepare your slides.

• Tell us about your work/ideas for up to 50 min.

• We record and post to YouTube Channel.

• You can use your webinar recording as a presentation card for introducing your work or ideas.

Anything that creates excitement and interest about FOSS4G is great.
For example:

• Research, service, or education activities.

• Applications.

• Discussion of issues/ideas, challenges, advantages, regarding the use of FOSS4G, etc...

• “Why I use FOSS4G in my organization?”

• “FOSS4G in country or organization X”

• “How to get started with FOSS4G in X or Y conditions or organization”

• “What would help me to get started with FOSS4G”

• Etc..
