The African Union was made a permanent member of the G20 at the New Delhi G20 Summit. The African Union now has the same status as the European Union - the only regional bloc with a full membership. Details at https://www.g20.org/

This is a right step towards a just, fair, more inclusive and representative global architecture and governance. India is a strong believer in having a greater Voice of the Global South countries on international platforms, particularly of African countries.

India hosted the Voice of Global South Summit under the theme – ‘Unity of voice, Unity of purpose’ from January 12-13, 2023. It was a new and unique initiative that envisaged bringing together countries of the Global South and share their perspectives and priorities on a common platform across a whole range of issues. G20 New Delhi Declaration: Harnessing Artificial Intelligence (AI) Responsibly for Good and for All

Congratulations to India’s G20 Presidency for the leadership to build consensus that led to the landmark G20 New Delhi Declaration. As holder of the G20 Presidency and incoming Council Chair of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence, India successfully fostered consensus among G20 leaders, leading to the adoption of the New Delhi Declaration on September 9th, 2023.

Following on from this success, the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence Summit 2023 will be held in New Delhi from 12-14 December 2023. Twenty-nine international partners, including the USA and the European Union, will unite to promote the responsible development and usage of AI. Details at https://gpai.ai

One of the key actions of the G20 Summit held in New Delhi in September 2023 was the International Conference on Open and Fair Data Ecosystem Principles, Policies and Platforms. The conference brought together policymakers and experts from all over the world to exchange ideas and discuss ways forward.

I would like to thank the Government of India and the conference organisers for inviting me to speak about the Ethical Data Initiative’s work at the conference. I shared information on the Data Ethics in Education Campaign , which was launched by the African Association of Universities, the University of Nottingham, and the Ethical Data Initiative in Summer 2023. The campaign advocates for the integration of data ethics into all higher education courses focused on data science and research to educate the next generation of data and research professionals about their legal and ethical obligations when using, reusing, and sharing data.

The African Union becoming a permanent member of the G20 is important for the Global South. Brazil is the next G20 President (2024) . South Africa will be joining the G20 troika along with India and Brazil this year and it will take up the G20’s presidency in 2025. G20 troika is a three-member group of past, current and succeeding presidencies. This is a good opportunity to build upon the excellent G20 New Delhi Declaration and build the voice of Global South at the multilateral bodies.

Best wishes

Suchith
