Ben / Markus,

Actually, r.in.gdal is only for rasters.  Is your coverage a vector
coverage or a grid?  If it is a grid, r.in.gdal should work.  If it
is a vector coverage you will need another approach.  The OGR portion
of GDAL supports grids now (post 1.1.7) but r.in.gdal does not.

You could use the avcimport/arcexport program to convert the coverage to
an E00 file and then import that with m.in.e00.  See:
