Thank you, Kirk, Hamish, and Michael, for your responses to my 
question on the demo file installation. I did use Lorenzo Moretti's 
binaries, and the application is running. It is great to have the 
application run from the Mac GUI.

Although the install of the demo files did not complete gracefully, 
the demo files were placed at the root level (as noted by Hamish). I 
also obtained the spearfish demo for GRASS 5.7 from the 
http://grass.itc.it/data.html.
