Hi Jeremy,

Your user profile for Grass is a file called ".grassrc6" that is created
in your home directory (ie. in windows: C:\msys\1.0\home\"username"\). If
you simply delete this file, then the "default" search path for your user id
will be deleted. Grass will create a new one when you restart it, and you
should then point it to your new Spearfish60 dataset that you have unzipped
to: C:\msys\1.0\home\grassdata\ . Make sure to highlight the "grassdata"
directory when locating it in the tree, but don't double click it...
Spearfish has two mapsets in it by default, PERMANENT and user1. You can
create a new one by typing a new name into the "create new mapset" space,
and clicking the button. If you make a new mapset, make sure that you will
be able to work with data in the other mapsets by going to menu item Config
--> Grass Working Environement --> Access other mapsets int he current
location, and selecting all the other mapsets...
Also, I read that another person was having trouble making new locations
in wingrass. Indeed, wingrass does not currently support the creation of new
locations at startup because an interactive text terminal is needed to
accomplish that, and the current release of wingrass does not support such
terminals (which is why aome other modules also fail to work in the current
relaease). To overcome this, just download the Spearfish dataset and follow
the instructions above. Once you have this, you can get into grass. Use GDAL
(file --> import --> raster files --> multiple formats using GDAL (or -->
vector files --> multiple formatrs using OGR))... Search for an existing GIS
file (ie. a geotiff or shapefile), and make sure to enter a name for the new
location to create using the spatial information stored in your GIS file.
Hit run, and your file will be imported into the location you just created.
Restart grass and make sure to select the new location (mapset PERMANENt,
will be created with your file, but you can create a new one if you are
unconforatble working in PERMANENT), and enter grass. You can now import
more data with the same projection info using the same methods outlined
above (GDAL/OGR) but be sure NOT to write a new location name this time. All
the data will then be imported into your current location (note: if the new
data's spatial extent (ie eastings and northings) exceeds the extents of
the first file you imported, you will need to check the box marked "extend
locations extents based on new data files". Otherwise your newly imported
data will be clipped to the same size as the first imported file).

Anyway, I hope this helps out..

Cheers,

Isaac Ullah
