[Liblas-devel] liblas.so.1 error

When I installed liblas 1.2.1 I get this error when calling las2txt.
las2txt:  error while loading shared libraries:  liblas.so.1:  cannot
open shared object file:1 No such file or directory

I'm on kubuntu 9.10.

Is there additional information I could provide to help resolve?
