 This may be related to #147 where, for some unknown reason, ALSA
 development libraries were required. I've since scrubbed this
 OS/installation due to this problem, but could someone verify (and
 document) this dependency and clear this ticket?

 (I don't know the apt-get install dependency for the ALSA development
 libraries for Ubuntu, please add a comment below for this if it fixes the
 problem).
