Here's a few things I can think of:

- you don't preserve permissions when you go the package route
- it takes longer to generate the package
- it's relatively easy to overflow the maximum package size if you're using managed data.

Is there anything wrong with Jackie's approach of loading a 2009 package on
a 2010 site?  That's my preferred method as well instead of having to run
through the below steps.
