Landview reference map

Hi!

OK, I'm stumped: how the heck does the LandView application (http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/mapping/landview/) get the reference map to display the red box in the mapplet? I'm trying to do something similar, and am stuck here. Any help here is much appreciated!
