I use the patched version of gd 1.8.4 available at:
     http://www.rime.com.au/gd/
So my configure looks like this:
     -with-gd=../gd-1.8.4
My notes also say that I created a symbolic link in /usr/lib to libpng.so.3 
named "libpng.so.22",but I can not remember why.
