Is it possible the browser being used can't display PNG files? MapServer
itself would cough up an error if it couldn't deal with the format.

perhaps the name of the files inside the demo.map file....

Or the png library is not installed...

try to use mapserv -v, and see the imputs and outputs...

See my mapserv -v example...

MapServer version 4.0.2 OUTPUT=PNG OUTPUT=JPEG OUTPUT=WBMP OUTPUT=PDF
OUTPUT=SWF SUPPORTS=PROJ SUPPORTS=FREETYPE SUPPORTS=WMS_SERVER
SUPPORTS=WMS_CLIENT INPUT=TIFF INPUT=EPPL7 INPUT=JPEG INPUT=POSTGIS
INPUT=GDAL INPUT=SHAPEFILE

as u see...OUTPUT=PNG

I hope that it could help u..
