Very nice -- way to go! It's great to see these approaches used in an
application such as this.

There's lots out there -- it would be even nicer when an OGC Registry
implentation makes it way out there, so we can all discover data (should
increase once the deegree WCAS gets out there later this summer).

Offhand, here are a few WMS instances with some global data:

CubeWerx DCW/VMAP:
http://demo.cubewerx.com/demo/cubeserv/cubeserv.cgi
Layer: lots -- you'll have to sift through

ENVISAT MERIS mosaic
Server: http://mapserv2.esrin.esa.it/ionicweb/map/GAEL_WORLD_MARCH
Layer name: GAEL_WORLD_MARCH

MODIS mosaic
Server: http://mapserv2.esrin.esa.it/cubestor/cubeserv/cubeserv.cgi
Layer name: WORLD_MODIS_1KM:MapAdmin

DEMIS World Map:
http://www2.Demis.nl/MapServer/Request.asp
Layer: lots -- you'll have to sift through

Hope this helps.
