Raster DEMs and MapServer

Travis,
I'd highly recommend keeping your data in GeoTIFF format.  There are ways to optimise the display in MapServer for TIFF imagery.  I find that the overhead involved with decompression some compressed formats, isn't worth it.  If you have lots of drive space, stick with TIFF.

I can't speak to the querying ability.  I don't know the status of it in MapServer at present, but I remember some talk about it.
