Indexing dbf files

Hi all,
I am performing a qureybyattribute on serveral shpfiles referanced by
a tileindex (created with tiles4ms).  The shpfiles have approximately
2.5 million records and I am finding the search very slow.  The field
I am querying is unique.  Is there a way to index the fields or any
other means  to help speed up the query
