Note that you can "aggregate many points into one point with the number
of points on the circular icon" through the CLUSTER object in the
mapfile for MapServer: http://www.mapserver.org/mapfile/cluster.html

(this may not be applicable to your PHP needs, but should still be noted
for the archives)
