Note: "    *  Convert all images for the article to PDF files using
this command:"convert foo.tif foo.pdf" "

No need to do that, pdflatex can read directly PNG, I suggest to change to

    *  Convert all images for the article to PNG files using this
command:"convert foo.tif foo.png"

AFAIK the PDF files consume more space/are of worse quality.

Hint: Request PNG in the first place from the authors :)
