[OpenLayers-Users] Newbie Questions

Hi All,

I'm new to openLayers and am curious about the exact software requirements
for using the openLayers API.  Specifically I want to access a map from
PostGIS and be able to run functions I have written in PostGIS on it from
the browser.

Can someone tell me do I require a web mapping server such as MS4W to do
this? I have read some of the documents on the openLayers web site but there
does not seem to be any that specifically answer this question.

If anybody can give me an answer on the exact software requirements for
doing the above or point me in the right direction or to a good tutorial, it
would be much appreciated.
