Use events for what? I'm not understanding. The OpenLayers code doesn't
listen for events for feature selection: the feature selection code
calls functions (which then cause events). We don't live that deeply in
an event-oriented framework that this makes sense, so I don't believe
"do it properly" and "use events" are tied together here.

Is your goal to cause a feature to become selected in the mind of the
selectfeature control?
