Yurka,

What format are you storing your data in?  Shapefile... PostGIS?  I doubt
there is a much more efficient way of handling that size dataset than your
current GeoServer/WMS method.  You may be able to optimize your current
setup by utilizing PostGIS Views rather than WMS Filters.  You may also want
to play around with setting scale thresholds for your image rendering- and
you could try using a single tile WMS layer.
