To answer your question, I got a file in version 1.4, and libLas states:
- libLAS does not provide support for LAS or LAZ 1.4, which PDAL does

I really doesn't know the LAS format by heart, but I want to be able to read files in 1.4 format.
It's not that much trouble, I'm glad to have the possibility to use PDAL for this.
