<http://www.mapaction.org/component/option,com_frontpage/Itemid,1/>is a
non-profit volunteer organization that provides GIS and mapping services to
disaster areas. They’ve just published a free 118-page Field Guide To
Humanitarian Mapping <http://www.mapaction.org/content/view/183/59/> that’s
a terrific introduction to both data acquisition using a GPS, and how to use
Google Earth and the free open-source Windows GIS program MapWindow for
mapping. I’d even say that it’s a far better choice for beginners than the
recently-published GIS For
Dummies<http://freegeographytools.com/2009/gis-for-dummies-just-published>(more
on that soon, when I get the review of that volume done).

"If you want to use a GIS software package other than the MapWindow suite
which is covered here, this guide may still be useful to you because
almost all the main concepts (particularly those described in sections
1.4 to 1.7) are relevant whatever software you intend to use."
