 gdt I was expecting it would be :).  The issue is from what I understand
 from EvenR breaking up gdal as you describe would be a monumental
 undertaking.  So back to astrodog's 0 out raster if it's a big deal to
 build with it.

 strk I see no benefit to breaking out raster from postgis if we can do
 what astrodog proposes easily and since raster functions are in a separate
 file anyway, it doesn't seem that much hassle.  I could probably do it
 myself.
