May I ask you how did you proceed in your upgrade ?

.. point 3 warn user it has to edit the Makefile,
but you're right it tells to *enable* GEOS and Proj instead
of *disable* them since they are enabled by default..

Do people think we should change the default or the documentation?

Automatically download and install is not a good idea (IMHO)
Users not willing to read the docs should get a packaged version
(.rpm or .deb or whatever).
