[Qgis-community-team] Website Management/TODO

Hi

One other thing to bear in mind while considering web site revisions
is that it would be really good to have a consistent look and feel
across all QGIS web site properties. So eventually it would be nice
to have the blog, forums, wiki and qgis.org all with as similar look
and feel as possible. I know this is not possible to do right away,
but it would be good to bear in mind when choosing templates etc.

Once apon a time I wrote the templates myself. The current version of
QGIS.org uses a theme I bought from http://joomlashack.org (no I'm
not getting commission for this :-), and I would say it was well
worth the $25USD or so I spent on it. Perhaps we can look there if
you feel the need for an updated template...

What is wrong with just using cron job, mpack, tar and mysqldump? I
use this on the current site to send myself a sql dump file each
night and will be happy to pass on the script I wrote (once I get
back to South Africa next week) for you to use.

I read the article too - too me it didn't provide any compelling
reason to use 1.5 - on the contrary increased developer activity
means lots of code changes and probably more sql injection holes. I
also like bleeding edge software....on the desktop....on servers it
makes sense to be conservative. I guess I am in the minority here so
I wont keep on being the squeaky wheel...and since you are
(thankfully! :-) ) going to be looking after QGIS.org it makes sense
that you are happy with what we are using too. Just bear in mind that
if we are hacked it a) causes damage to the perception of the QGIS
project if people arrive at a page covered in porn / viagra ads etc
and b) will cost you time and effort to repair the damage.

See note above about backups using cron etc.

Great to see you are going to be looking after QGIS.org, and please
dont take my comments above as negative - I just like to bring a more
conservative outlook to the deployment of server software.
