Hi Harrissou,
it think it is an unintended and unwanted side effect of the changes in 
the download page.

In fact the JavaScript code that displays the thank you / donation 
overlay was no removed and it is still in the download page [1] but it 
no longer works.

It seems to me this side effect may be responsible for the decrease in 
donations reported by the qgis-donations bot after the 9th of September 
(when the "Download page simplification" PR [2] was merged) as it is 
possible to see in the qgis-donations bot activity [3].

I've filed an issue report [4].
