Hi Michael,

I think such details are currently missing in documentation. If you are
into it now, can you please write something about it and do a pull
request (or just sent some text to the community list and the place
where you want to put it)?

FYI we also resurrected the index pages of documentation:

http://docs.qgis.org/testing/en/genindex.html

would be nice if these kind of env/conf vars would show up there.
