There is no logic to check input size, so QGIS will try to keep it in memory.
It is user responsibility to decide if using temporary output makes
sense with his data.

I think this wording is historical thing. Previously Processing was
using real temporary files
to store intermediate and final outputs. When developing QGIS 3.0 we
have switched to
memory layers but have not adjusted this placeholder text.
