I wonder if the attribute table is not attached properly. Have you tried
v.db.join and specified the table to use with the vector layer?

Were these layers in grass already or did you import them with QGIS?

Could you clarify, are you using the QGIS built in Editing toolbar,
Split Features command. Does it work on a polygon?
