[Qgis-user] spatial queries in qgis

Are spatial queries available in Qgis? 
I know I can filter objects by attributes, but I'd like to select objects that intersect/are within other objects, etc. The secondary question is 
can I perform buffering in QGIS?
I've read 1.0.2 documentation and didn't find such functionalities. If QGIS lack it, is it possible to get it by Grass integration or in other way?
