Hi,

You can manually remove layers or groups that you aren't interested in 
by pressing the "x"-Button (this can be done by selecting the legend in 
the canvas and using the "Item" tab to the right of the map canvas). By 
default, only the currently visible layers will be included into the 
legend. There is also an "Update" or "All" button if you want to update 
to a new selection of visible layers.

Does this help/clarify things about the legend?

What version are you using? If you are using an older version (1.3 or 
1.4) the legend may behave different compared to a current version (1.5 
or dev-version).
