Hi Giovanni and others, 

I solved the problem with loading the Gdaltools 0.0.18 into OSGeo4W Qgis
1.4. You indeed need to load an additional library which is default not
installed with Qgis: the Gdal/OGR 1.6 Python bindings and scripts.
