[Qgis-user] qgis, gdal and hdf (ubuntu)

For those wondering qgis cant open hdf files, because the Ubuntu repo
flavor or gdal isn't compiled with hdf support. You have to compile it
yourself and then recompile qgis with your custom build. 

That made me wondering:

Why qgis needs  gdal to be defined on compilation time? Isn't possible
to use gdal as external lib, and as so being able to 'change the path'
through options or something similar - that would be easier (for me) to
just point to the version of gdal i like.
