Hi Jel,

It might also help to just go through the basis/fundamental of GIS
which will help you in learning/understanding the software. Things
like the layer concept. Vector and Raster data models. Spatial objects
with tabular data, spatial reference systems/coordinate systems etc.

>From my experience. Spatial reference system is overlooked by many new
GIS people but the basis of GIS is really the spatial component. I
have seen people worked on and digitized on layers with different
spatial reference systems unknowingly and when they try to put them
together they get messed up. Luckily these days a lot of software do
on the fly projections but its still important to understand Spatial
reference systems or at least keep your data to a consistent spatial
reference system.

Going through the basics would also allow you see and do more with GIS
apart from just making static maps as you were looking at.
